Stadtl Shuffle 25. – 27. 4. 2025

What to expect

Come join us for a delightful weekend in a walkable city full of cafés, early 20th century architecture and people with their hearts open!

Three nights, each with a different flavour. During the day, choose between immersion in balboa classes or non-dancing activities led by our community members. Balance dance, social interactions and rest in any way your heart desires.

If you’re fond of small and cozy events where connections seem to flow more easily, we’ll be happy to have you!

Values of our event

Building a community of care

As balboa dancers, we already share the same interests and practices. By bringing care into the mix, we’re learning to build a more honest, caring community – locally and as a whole.

Thanks to welcoming guests from different cities and contexts, we can get inspired and learn what makes a dance community strong – reaching back to the relationships we foster in day-to-day life.

Peer to peer learning

By a way of immersion in an open-level group, we’re polishing the skill of learning something new in every class, no matter the material or experience of others.

By listening to and caring for our dance partners, we’re empowering others in the community to become stonger dancers – together.

Safe space to explore

We do our best to create a prejudice-free environment, where balboa can serve as a space for play, self-discovery and connecting with others.

We do not tolerate hasassement of any kind and will have a safe space team ready to assist you whenever needed.

Please read our Code of Conduct before registration.

Love for balboa and swing

We cherish the dance, deeply enjoy swing music and are curious to see where the scene is heading.

We recognize that balboa is a part of tradition of jazz dance, black art form originating in Harlem, New York.

We thrive to be respectful guests in a culture that doesn’t belong to us.

Classes

All classes will be held in English and will take place in Swing Wings studio.

>1 year of experience: full pass

Join us in a 6 hour long immersion, getting inspired by a delighful couple of facilitators as well as each other! You might expect discussions, video-watching or other non-dancing activities as a part of those 6 hours. This way, you’ll be able to thoroughly get to know our teachers and dig deep into their dance philosophy.

Mirroring the experience many of us share in our local communities, we’ll learn together in one open-level group (minimal requirements apply). To join the group, you need more than 1 year of experience with balboa. You should be comfortable with basics in pure bal and bal-swing: up-hold, down-hold, come around, lollies, swivels, toss-out. However, the classes will be suitable for much more experienced dancers as well!

< 1 year of experience: beginner+ track

If you started your balboa adventure less than a year ago, beginner+ track is just the thing for you. You still need some experience with balboa: you should know at least one of the balboa basics and some of the moves. This track is not meant for complete beginners.

To welcome you to the world of balboa festivals, the teachers will spend 2 hours with you on Friday evening. This way, you will have the whole weekend to try the new ideas on the dancefloor and will also be able to join the daytime communal activities during the weekend!

Note: you’ll need to register the beginner+ track as an addition to your party pass. The beginner+ track will only open if enough people register in time, so don’t leave it up to the last minute 🙂

Teachers

Our teachers are Giedre & Camille, both living, teaching and co-creating a wonderful balboa community in Berlin, Germany.

About Giedre and Camille:

Giedre‘s journey into the world of swing dance began with Lindy Hop back in early 2000s. After traveling around the world learning and teaching swing dance Giedre established her base in Europe’s party capital, Berlin, where she became an active member of a vibrant Balboa dance community. An educator by nature and a historian by the degree, Giedre is currently researching women’s role in early Jazz music and dance history. In her classes one should expect a fair amount of musicality, fun technical tips and lots of good ideas on improvisation for both leaders and followers.

Camille is a contemporary dancer and choreographer. He teaches Balboa from his experience of body awareness, movement experimentation and improvisation. Expect a less conventional approach to learning couple dance, with balance and visualisation techniques, emphasising understanding your own body to open your connection to the ground, to your partner and to the music.

Why we like them: Full of fresh ideas, Camille and Giedre value rhythm as well as human connection. Play seems to be a big part of their dance and partnership – and who wouldn’t benefit from taking themselves a bit less seriously? 🙂

With this playful mindset, they recently placed second in Open Strictly at European Balboa Festival in Toulouse,  and how radiant they looked! Maybe you’d wish to follow their dancing adventures on Instagram?

Parties

Friday warm-up

in Moravská galerie. Doors open at 19:45, taster starts at 20:00.

What better way to kick off the festival than a DJ battle on Friday night!
DJ Peter (Brno) invited Miss Viper Lil (Berlin) to trade one set each on vinyl, culminating in a shared set, battle format. Whether you enjoy trusted old balboa tracks or prefer new (and possibly unexpected) sounds, you’ll have plenty to shuffle to all night!

The night starts with
taster class “From Slow to Bal” with Gašper and Leanna (both currently based in Berlin). Whether you’re a lover of balboa slow or fast, join them to bridge the gap between the two by exploring tricks that work surprisingly well in both.

Saturday celebration

in Moravská galerie. Doors open at 19:30

You’ll barely want to step out of the dancefloor during the main night!

Our band for the night Radio King Quintet will come from Prague, bringing the most trusted balboa melodies along. From previously announced quartet to quintet – the Saturday night band grew in size!

DJ Antonín’s (Prague) theme: the best of balboa classics for a soirée full of shuffling on the most beautiful wooden floors of Moravian Gallery.

About Radio King Quintet:

David Maxa on drums, Petr Pospíšil on bass, Mirek Lacko on piano, Petr Jambor on trumpet, and Petr Chadim on saxophone. They are among the most experienced swing musicians in the Czech Republic, and together, as Radio King Quintet, they will keep the party going with their authentic 1930s Benny Goodman sound.

Why we like them: What a scrumptious vintage rhythm they produce! Whether pleasantly fast or delightfully slow, their music invites you to dance and rarely takes no for an answer.

Although a fairly fresh band in the scene, David, who’s also the drummer for Ondřej Havelka and His Melody Makers, brought together true masters in swing and it shows.  You know his partner in crime Petr from Tryin’-To-Be-Good Men, the main band of our previous editions, where he plays the vibraphone.

Saturday afterparty

in Café Alfa.

After we leave our beautiful main venue (Moravská galerie), we’d like to invite you to our next location, Café Alfa, where the Saturday party continues until approx. 4 in the morning.

Sunday early chill

in Institut Paměti národa Brno. Doors opens at 16:00.

Whether you’ll stay in Brno for a bit or need to be tucked in your own bed by Sunday night, come share some more dances during late afternoon!

Enjoy your last dances of the weekend with Django Jet. They’ve been a cornerstone of our community for over a decade, and we can’t wait to dance to their Django-style swing, performed by two guitars, violin, and double bass.
